My father knew Jimmy Rollo when he was in his 20s and they met in Watford. They became great friends, and Jimmy eventually moved to Tunbridge Wells after my dad Brian O’Neill did. My dad says he lived in a bed sit at the time and Jimmy slept in his hallway on a mattress; my dad used to have to step over him to get in and out. Jimmy had put up dad up though previously so he gladly returned the favour. I remember Jimmy Rollo as a little girl. He used to take his leg off for me if I asked him to. Larger than life in both size and personality. My family all were so fond of him and we talk about him often and I love hearing the stories. I have just been in a pub in Tunbridge Wells that my dad & Jimmy used to go in & we talked about him, googled him and found this page. What an incredible man to have people still remembering him from childhood and people speaking about him still. He brings laughter to us still. My dad misses him. Wherever you are Jimmy, they’ll be having a ball. One of a kind. Xx

The first footballer I met

Jim was one of my first heroes when i was a boy. He played for Bradford City in the mid 60s.
After a match one day, me and my little brother were amazed to see him stood at a bus stop waiting to go home. We talked to him for half an hour. It's nearly half a century ago one but I can still remember the thrill of being in the company of a 'real' footballer. He was very friendly and wise and approachable.
Can you imagine meeting a footballer at a bus stop these days?
I will always remember Jim Rollo.

My first hero

I first saw Jimmy Rollo when I was 7 years old and he was goalkeeper for Oldham Athletic. More than 50 years later I still recall how much I was in awe of his agility and bravery. He was my first footballing hero.
My condolences to his family. Thanks for the memories at Oldham Jimmy.
