What a woman. I was privileged to get to know this amazing actress when she appeared in Pygmalion at the Garrick. We spent many happy hours in fits of laughter, usually brought on by one of her anecdotes. She was witty, funny, intelligent and very wicked in the best sense of the word. To me, she was our greatest stage actress. She was also very kind. One day an extremely famous actress came to see me while Diana was with me. She had not worked much for some years and was living a frugal life. She and Diana had never met, but Diana made her feel like a million dollars. She then invited her to come the evening show and said she would arrange a top seat for her. What the other actress didn’t know was, there were no free seats. Diana paid out of her own pocket. She also arranged for a programme and drinks for our visitor. It was done quietly and with great thought. Such elegance is rare and people of Dame Diana’s ilk are even rarer. I will always remember the joy and laughter she brought with her and the raucous jokes! She will be sadly missed. She was a STAR in every sense of the word and there will never be another like her.
