I was in the ‘upper 6th form’ at what was then the Westwood high school when I got to know Helen who was in the year below. I knew then that she was ‘one of my people’ - I’m pretty sure (and forgive me if I’m wrong) that we appeared on an episode of ‘Kilroy’ together in the 90’s, debating animal rights. It was with a breath of fresh air that we reconnected on Facebook years later, with it being very much confirmed that I was right to think of Helen as ‘one of my people’ - her politics resonated massively with me and when I was blessed with my long awaited for daughter, Helen sent the loveliest messages of support. I was moved by the very obvious closeness and love she had for her daughter and in awe of her passion for family, friends, community, politics and how she always stood up for what was right. Even tho’ it’s been years since we met in person, she will hold a very special place in my memories.
