POPPY

Self reliant and strong
looking after four boys,
Motherhood for Poppy
was a particular joy.
She sparkled at work
- and loved it at Woolies!
It was a tonic
- almost a perk!

She was accepting of change,
quite modern in fact
Embracing her life. Never looking back.
She didn’t have enemies,
she was everyone’s friend
You were always special to her,
right to the end

Poppy’s birthday was sacrosanct -
July fifteenth
A family gathering at Roselands
to celebrate,
meet and greet.
With food to feed an army,
and anecdotes galore
Poppy showered us with love,
talking for Britain – and more!
She spoke fast and furious
entertaining the crowd
Endless stories repeatedly told.

A cruise down the Rhine at Christmas time
With Tony, her beau. Oh, it was all so fine.
On another occasion
they travelled the world
Crossing the globe - the countries unfurled
- to Australia! Her favourite place
Kangaroos, koalas and plenty of space!

Her passion for equality,
her down to earth way
Was individual and refreshing;
life-affirming actually.
Completely uninterested in status or power
A socialist by nature,
we were all equal to her.
Accepting of people whoever they were - whatever their way.
“Remember your socialist roots!”
she would rather obliquely say

She loved to do crosswords
with Tony at home,
Or quietly read a war time romance
on her own.
She played classical music
like her father before her
A strong work ethic was intrinsic to her

Lively and fun, non judgemental too
She gave you permission for you to be you
Restorative, well balanced,
uplifting and kind
A comforting presence, in spirit and mind

We’ll miss you Poppy,
we’ll miss you so much
You were always there, weren’t you,
for each one of us
