Derek and I probably met a couple of times a year. One of those annual occasions was at Tunbridge Wells Town Hall for Remembrance Sunday. Derek was always a gentlemen, a pleasure to talk to and immaculately dressed at very occasion. RIP

Derek was friendly, kind and a very interesting person who I always sought out to chat to at Mayoral and other Civic functions. RIP Derek a true gentleman.

Derek, it was an absolute pleasure, all too brief. Stand down, rest easy. My condolences to family and friends.

In the early 80’s Derek and I spent a lot of time working on E.O.D. activities. This was very memorable because it had to be done ‘ in a hurry’ to save operator lives!
Derek and I were both presented with ‘Felix Tankards’ for our services. I still have my one. If Derek’s didn’t survive, his son’s are welcome to mine.
R.I.P. Derek.

Derek, you were such a cool cousin. My earliest memory of you is helping Elaine and I to join our billy carts together with yours and your friend Lewie's billy carts. We went belting down Reynolds Lane in a billy cart train for most of the morning - can still see your smile at the engineering triumph - and the look of amazement on the face of young Constable , who was sent to stop us scaring the local residents.

Thanks for being such a brilliant mentor to me and so many other young people. You were a gem, Del. I will not forget you.

Love, Steve Ireland
