Peter was a kind and humorous gentleman, as well as a scientist, inventor and wise elder. It was a privilege to work with him to pursue the commercialization of his masterpiece Peptest in China and experience interesting things in life together. He never left us, the memories he brought to us, and the results he brought to science will last forever.

Peter's passing leaves us all with less in our lives. A great and generous man who was fun to be with and who treated absolutely everyone as equal. His love and devotion to science was infectious to all who knew him or who worked with him. He saw potential in young people and inspired them. His achievements in health care over the decades and his ability to forge collaborations between research and academia are for all to see and be proud of. Our biannual pilgrimages to cricket at Headingly will be fondly remembered especially the days when rain beat the cricket but didn't beat the fun and laughter nor our optimism for Hull City. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to all the family.

I send my heartfelt sympathy to all the Dettmar family at this very sad time. I knew Peter when we both lived in Welwyn Garden City and we shared a lot of good times in the cubs, scouts and then later in the pub in the fifties and sixties. We lost touch for about fifty years as like so many, we travelled in different directions. In September 2019, old friends in the USA organised a friends re-union in Hertfordshire when I had the pleasure of Peter's, and all the other friends' company, for a long Sunday lunch. He was in good form and hadn't changed a bit from his younger friendly self. I was delighted to hear all about his successful projects and it is great to read so many of the kind comments from his colleagues, family, and friends.
