Best known as the long-suffering "mum" in TV's On The Buses, actress Doris Hare died on 30 May, 2000, aged 95.She was born in Bargoed, Mid Glamorgan, into a showbiz family.Her parents ran atravelling theatre company and her three brothers and two sisters were all on the stage.She is said to have made her stage debut aged three, before going solo as 'Little Doris Hare'.Her90 years of performing around the worldtook in performances as diverse as pantomime, and roles with The National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.But it was her leading role in the popular 1970ssitcom On the Buses that brought her into the public eye, starring alongside Reg Varney, Bob Grant and Michael Robbins as Reg's mum.Anna Karen, who played her screen daughter in the series, said of Doris: "She was an absolutely amazing lady. I've never met a woman who was so full of life."Her screen debut was in the classic film Night Mail, with TV roles in Dixon of Dock Green, The Saint, Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Coronation Street to follow.Three spin-off films, On the Buses, Mutiny on the Buses and Holiday on the Buses, allowed her to reprise the role that made her name, with her final stage appearance in the West End farce It Runs in the Family in the early 1990s.She was recognised with an MBE in 1941 and a Variety Club of Great Britain Special Award in 1982.Doris married Dr Fraser Roberts and they had two daughters Susan and Catherine.
