DavidBELLAMY Passed away on 11th December 2019, aged 86. A much loved naturalist and TV personality, he is said to have inspired a generation and will be greatly missed. David was president and co-founder of the Conservation Foundation as well as being involved in a number of other conservation and environmental projects throughout his career. His death was announced by The Conservation Foundation on 11th December, who said: "The Conservation Foundation is greatly saddened to announce the death on 11th December 2019 of Professor David Bellamy OBE, our co-founder and President. The Foundation was very special to David and he was very special to us." In a statement, David Shreeve, director of the Conservation Foundation, said: "Sadly, I have to report that David Bellamy died this morning. David and I worked together on a variety of projects in various places since launching The Conservation Foundation in 1982.
He was a larger-than-life character who became a very special friend and teacher. He inspired a whole generation with his wide range of interests and enthusiasm which knew no bounds. The Conservation Foundation was very special to him and so today is very sad for all of us."
London-born David was a household name as a TV personality, scientist and conservationist. Bellamy worked in a factory and as a plumber before meeting his future wife Rosemary, to whom he was still married when he died. They had lived in Hamsterley Forest in County Durham since 1960. The couple had five children. Bellamy studied and later taught botany at Durham University.

I worked with David on a water project at the settlement ponds at Heathrow Airport. He was an amazing man, and launched me into a 30year environmental career. I have so much to thank him for. Rip David. You did more than your bit for the planet.

I am not a friend of David. But, I really look forward to meeting him in heaven. He cared for our planet and education. I am sorry that this is so weak but lost my dear father 6 weeks ago. I know that they are able to together praise God. This message seems weird and I hope you can see the care behind it. Xx

I was in awe of David's inspirational Botany lectures at Durham Science Laboratories when I arrived as a 'fresher' in 1962. What a giant of a personality - so knowledgeable, enthusiastic and all round great guy.
