Being in my late teens in the mid 70’s and already a Villa fan, Ron Saunders was a pivotal figure in my life. He is responsible for the love I feel for the club and at 62 years of age I still drive 70 miles each way for every home game. I recall as if they were yesterday those days and nights at Villa Park ... we were on a crest of a wave that felt like it would never end. I didn’t know how lucky we were to have him as our manager, I just knew that I was having the time of my life. Those days of Gidman, Rimmer, Mortimer, Cropley, Little, Deehan, Gray, Aitken ... oh my what a team we had ... ask Liverpool how good we were after that 5-1 thumping on a December night in 1976 on their way to becoming Division 1 and European Cup winners ... and responsible for all of that was the boss, Mr 110%. We didn’t care if the opposition scored first because we knew we’d score more.
Ron, you are my true footballing hero. Always will be. Rest in peace Boss.
