Joseph Lymer & Son

Business Overview
Established by Joseph Lymer and his son George in the early 50’s, trading originally from their fruit shop in Waterloo Street, Hanley, where Joe a former minor, would notoriously stand on the step of his shop, so as not to miss the passing trade, whilst George sold fruit and vegetables from his horse and cart.
With the slow demise of corner shops, a decision was made to diversify into the Funeral Trade, and in the 50’s when few families owned a car, they were a taxi service, often doing weddings, maternity runs and funerals all with the same vehicle.
In 1956 the shop was sold, Joe and his wife Edna moved to Werrington and George and his wife Eira moved into the premises at Bucknall, where we still trade from today. George and Eira had three girls, Sheila, Diana and Karen.
George never letting go of his passion for horses, and passing this on to all three of his daughters, who competed at all levels on their many ponies over the years.
George sadly died suddenly in 1981 at the age of 58, followed by Joe in 1985 aged 89 and Eira in 1987. Leaving the running of the business to granddaughters Diana, Karen and husband Glen.
The girls having joined their father on leaving school, and Glen a former mechanic joining them in 1981. Today we are still very much a family concern, offering a caring service to meet the needs of individuals, whether it be a small quiet funeral, or a more lavish affair with a horse drawn hearse. Our long serving staff members, Stephen Clarke and John Walker help us to continue what Joe and George started over 50 years ago.
At our premises in Bucknall, we offer a complete funeral package, arranging everything from Church Service to printing and floral tributes. Families can choose whether they call in to our office, where we have disabled access and ample off road parking, or a visit in the comfort of their own home.
We have a long and proud history of personal service, care & respect for the deceased and family.
For generations families have entrusted us with their funeral requirements because they know respect, care and tradition are at the core of every funeral we arrange.
