The Man who enlightened my life with Art
Added by Henry Hubball
I was a street kid like Harry, I was an apprentice toolmaker he was a at George Dixon’s grammar school. Then I was blown away by meeting him when he was at Chelsea Art College. He took me into his world of Art and Intellectualism and the philosophy of Art and then Literature and he lit a shining light in me that has never died. I did a B.A. (Hons) in Literature and Philosophy that I would never have seen or found without Harry’s powerful influence. His care and indulgence in me shaped my life and influenced how I brought up my own three children and my teaching and now my writing. He was my best friend. Every time I read or write anything It is with his influence and today I feel so sad in that deep quintessential sadness that admits only the special people in my life. He may be gone now but he will always be with me. I Loved Him dearly.

I couldn’t let this moment pass without expressing my sadness at the passing of Harry . I stood many nights shoulder to shoulder with him in his office ( The Grove ) listening to his accounts of his day or days at work. With his sharp wit and a colourful story telling he kept me amused for hours. The best was when he was surrounded by his workforce- Rupert and Joe (Cliff) especially on a Friday night when wages were being negotiated. TV missed out on one of the most funniest sitcoms with Harry in the starring role. Our drinks together help me put my terrible day behind me and he lightened my load. What more could you ask for.
Handsworth and beyond has lost an amazing larger than life character which will be sadly missed.
I also benefited from Harry’s music 🎵 knowledge and he introduced me to bands and albums I would never have come across.
Although the flesh has gone his spirit remains with all that knew him. Each of us who knew him will have a special memory which will remain
My thoughts are with all the family but know that the many who remember Harry fondly will help to provide strength during this difficult time .

So , H , Harry Man and Bharjari, you were known by many names in our household. Im so sorry to hear about your passing from this life. I first met you when you coming out of a house in Antrobus Rd, , I was off to do my paper round every morning and you off back to your house to get ready for work. My first thoughts were that you were grumpy and we hardly said anything to me but morning. However, you found out I was a Baggies fan and our long friendship started. I would eventually be able to meet you for a pint in the Grove and for me the rest is nothing but pure unconditional love. Your were there for the good times for me and shared my sorrows. I loved playing footie with you as well and just bumping in your around Handsworth was lovely. You seemed to know everyone and brought a smile to people’s faces the area , your story tell and whit was amazing. When our girls were younger they loved seeing you and think that says it all, someone who could connect with anyone. When we moved out of Handsworth we perhaps drifted apart but when we did meet up it was like we had only met yesterday , take care my friend and mentor , you certainly provided me a lessons and knowledge which were priceless, farewell for now and as you would say to me , we will be re born and if our bond is strong we will meet again , I look forward to that x

As we traverse through life we come across people who touch our lives in the most unexpected of ways.
Harry was one such person-a close neighbour for more than two decades or so. We always joked about living on the cheaper end of Somerset Road!
He had a razor like wit and the ability to make you smile even at 6.30am as I waited at the number 11 bus stop on a dark, freezing winter morning; he'd come round the corner as the dog took him for his early morning walk.
Our frequent chewing the fat sessions be they at the Co op, outside St. Andrew's Hall or out side his door were wide and varied. They were a reflection of his deep intellect and understanding of the world around us.
He was passionate about setting up a Community arts group and I know he had seriously explored this even looked at venues and approached different organisations. He would run the Painting classes and I as an English teacher would read poems and stories. It was not meant to be!
Harry was an enigma-a sort of 20th/21st century Bohemian lifestyle was his choice.
Somerset Road ( the cheaper end!)will never be the same without.
Harry we never got to put the world to rights...go gently into the good night.

Harry, ‘H’, ‘Sir’, I salute you. I will miss our summer chats whilst we sat on a wooden bench outside the Co-Operative, waiting for the discounted items to appear on the empty shelves. Often we would see a police car appear from round the corner and give a sigh of relief as it drove past with loud threats of speed. I will miss our conversations on the 101 bus, and you giving up your seat for the ladies and the vulnerable, but never me. I will miss our ongoing debates about the Villa’s progress, as far back as 1996, when Southgate missed a penalty in which you took great pleasure in announcing. But most of all, I will miss your sincerity and integrity, as a friend, former teacher and mentor. June xx
