DonCLEMENTSOn 20th March 2020, after 55 years of marriage, a stroke took away my much loved husband, Don. A Civil Engineer/bridges, M1 widening, Hatfield Tunnel, mainly with Hertfordshire County Council and the RCU. Don was blessed with a great sense of humour. He crammed many and varied interests into his life such as meteorology, an Arts & Design degree from UH, sailing, ski-ing, walking, travelling, classical music, jellied eels and cooking. He is sorely missed by faithful friends and by me, Ellen Clements

I met Don in about 1975 when he joined HCC / RCU where we were involved in the design and construction of major highway projects in Hertfordshire. He was a great mentor and an enthusiastic squash player. I felt sorry for contractors who tried to negotiate claims with him.
Meteorologist, engineer, sailor, traveller to foreign parts, long distance walker, skier, lover of lakes and mountains, artist, foodie and chef, lover of wildlife, and argumentative. A good friend to us and caring husband to Ellen. Known by my wife as the “Miserable Old Sod”, he loved it.
We will miss you Don and your cooking.

What a lovely man, I met him at our hotel many years ago and every December Ellie and Don came for our 5 day before Christmas break. We are all very sorry to hear the news, we shall also have a campari in his memory. Sending Ellie lots of love too. xx

The previous tributes sum up the man Don exactly, full of humour and argumentative for the hell of it. We, his cousins Hazel and Lesley, remember the boy Don who always had to be the leader and at the end of the day was always clean and tidy while we were dirty and scruffy.

My thoughts are with you at this very sad and difficult time. I knew Don from both Bridge and walks. He was always good company and interesting to talk to; albeit usually taking an alternative view.

We met Don and Ellie at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel years ago, we loved hearing stories about all your travels and all the wonderful places around the world you have been. I will always remember the journey back from the Lakes where we crammed all 4 of us into our small car to get you home! You will be much missed, we shall have a campari in your memory xx

From Keith and Maureen,
We met Don and Ellie on the Coast to Coast walk in 1991. We enjoyed their company then and have continued to do so on our memorable twice yearly weekend get together since.
As Mick Coes says, Don always enjoyed a combative conversation. His range of knowledge was on a multi of subjects was amazing. He had a lovely quirky sense of humour and his love for life and seeing the world made him a pleasure to be with.
We will miss him.
