Mr. Durham was my Latin master at Todmorden Grammar School. He also taught my Uncle Charlie, my brother, Hugh, and our cousin, Richard. He was an avid collector of antiques and much of our class would be devoted to a discussion of his latest acquisition, with a few minutes of Latin at the end of the class. But we all loved him and strove to excel for him. With his encouragement I went on to study Latin at the University of Liverpool. Mr. Durham remained a friend for life, and even sent a Victorian "Baby" brooch to mark the birth of my son. He was an important part of my life, and will be missed.
