Calvin ShaunFRAYIt is with the greatest pain and sadness to let you know that my Dad, Calvin Fray passed away peacefully yesterday. In September 2021 Dad got his Germ Cell Cancer diagnosis, he turned up to every single chemotherapy with nothing but positivity and patience, Never complained, never angry and always kind. He protected everyone around him throughout the entirety of his treatment, took time out to see me get married, and treated every nurse and carer with nothing but the respect they truly deserved. For those who knew of dad's diagnosis and maybe didn’t see him, he wants you to know to not feel any guilt, that he understood and just wants everyone to not live with any what ifs and regrets. His cancer was aggressive near the end of his treatment and quicker than even the doctors could of imagined, but he carried himself with understanding and care for everyone around him. For those that know me, my dad is and will always be my hero and best friend, and I hope one day I can become the kind of friend and father that he truly was. Dad finally passed without pain, nothing left unsaid, with his family around him. Whilst nothing can be done to change the past, what I can reiterate is that Cancer does not discriminate, and it will take without Remorse. Please do not hesitate on a check-up or a self-check. Please tell whoever is close to you how you feel, how much you love and care for them and give them a big cuddle. The care the Dorothy House Hospice provided to my Dad allowed me and others to spend the last days with him in a safe and calm space, the nurses were absolutely incredible and provided the care and comfort that allowed us to focus on time together.

Calvin was a very thoughtful, caring, loyal, moral, and humorous man. We shared some middle of the night black humour moments at his home in the days just before going into Dorothy House Hospice. “Sorry for waking you up with my coughing Mum” – pause – “At least you know I’m still alive”!

Calvin was always a positive man. When he received his initial diagnosis of germ cell cancer, he focussed on the 98% chance of being cured and, in his words, “just crack on with it”. Although tough, the treatment seemed to be going well until he learned in January that the cancer had spread to his brain and increased in his lung.

You will have heard from George his thoughts about his Dad. I thought Calvin was sometimes a little harsh with George, but I was wrong – what a wonderful “little Calvin” he’s turned out to be!

George and I have lovely memories of the month we spent with Calvin in Australia for Christmas and New Year 2004 and of our trip to Barcelona.

Calvin is immensely proud of what George has achieved – in his work and in his devotion to his family, Reah and Ellis – and what a wonderful positive gift Ellis was and continues to be during the whole of Calvin’s illness and this sad time afterwards – he’s a constant delight who brings us joy and back down to earth! Thank you, Reah and your family who have been immensely supportive of both George and Calvin.

Thank you is an inadequate expression for how we feel about Dorothy House, where Calvin spent his last two weeks of life. We all think we know about the wonderful Hospice movement, but they are so much more than looking after people at the end of their lives. They gave Calvin a quality of life whereby he could resolve some issues, say the things he wanted to say and finally be at peace with himself – what a gift! The wonderful staff look after the whole family and can read you like a book! We will be for ever grateful, and we will spend the rest of our lives fundraising for them.
