JoanHUCKLEThe family are sad to announce the loss of Joan who died peacefully at home in Nettleham on Saturday 24th April 2021. Joan was born in October 1947. Married to husband, Roger in 1973, Joan was a loving, caring wife who devoted her happy life to her family - children Abigail and Alexander, their partners Carl and Beth, grandchildren Hattie and Alfie, sister and cousins and to many friends and work colleagues. As an inspiring teacher, Joan initially taught at St Peter in Eastgate C of E Infant School and then spanned four decades at Nettleham C of E Junior School, Joan was also Chair of Governors at Welton William Farr Secondary School. With particular thanks to those who loved and supported Joan over the last few months, the carers, doctors, nurses and everyone at Welton Family Health Centre who gave Joan the time at home she wished for. A private funeral will take place at Nettleham Church on Wednesday 19th May at 11.15am. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations be made to Marie Curie or St Barnabas Hospice via Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Services, 11 Proctors Road, Lincoln, LN2 4LA. Tel 01522 535800.

She was a wonderful and caring person. I knew her first as a patient teacher when I was a child and later as a lovely woman, who loved her family. She will be missed by everyone whose lives she touched.

I consider it one of the great privileges of my life to have known Joan as a colleague and friend during our shared time at Nettleham CE Junior School. She was a rock upon whom I could always depend and the embodiment of all that was special about the school. We shared wonderful times with a special group of people. For me the school hall will always be full of the sound and joy of Joan’s wonderful productions and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
“Autumn Days” is drifting from her piano as I write.
“All these things I loved so well,
So I mustn’t forget,
No I mustn’t forget,
To say a great big thank you,
I mustn’t forget”
Joan you really were the “silk inside all our chestnut shells.”
God bless you!
With love and a thousand happy memories,
Peter and Jane Staves

I had the privilege of getting to know Joan when I was training to be a teacher at Nettleham Juniors. At that time, Joan had retired from being a full-time teacher some years before, but she was still an active and important member of the school community. Joan was always incredibly supportive and encouraging of me when I was first finding my way around the classroom and I really believe that her presence was key to me being able to finish the year and become a qualified teacher. Joan had so much experience in education and I was able to learn so much from her; I remember one time she told me, “Teachers are so excited for pupils to be using mini-whiteboards in lessons, but I remember 50 years ago we had the exact same thing with mini-blackboards and chalk. I have been in education so long that I am seeing the same ideas for the second time!”

I am now in my eighth year of teaching; initially, I taught locally, but I have since moved to Mexico City, where I am teaching in an international school. I can honestly say that I have used teaching tips and tricks of the trade that Joan taught for every year of my teaching career! That's the amazing thing about wonderful teachers like Joan; the lessons that she taught continue to impact lives long after she originally taught them. I am certain that there are thousands of colleagues, pupils and parents who have similar memories of Joan and are grateful for the positive impact she had on their lives. I am deeply saddened to hear of Joan’s passing, but I know that these wonderful memories and lessons she taught me will not be forgotten any time soon.

A wonderfully kind lady, taken too soon. Always ready to help and listen. She supported Hermione when struggling at school, she was the only teacher Hermione would get up for at 0800 for extra support. Love to all the family xx
