Born in Belfast, Richard Lorimer lived in Hoddeson and Broxbourne from 1964 to 2004 and was the founder and director of the Broxbourne Midsummer Festival from 1986 until 2000. The festival's scope expanded considerably over the years with a feast of music, art and drama on offer to culture buffs, and this has been maintained by the Broxbourne Arts Forum since Richard left Hertfordshire and moved with his wife, Judy, to be nearer family in Yorkshire.

In 2001 Richard was one of the first to be presented with Broxbourne Council's Civic Award to mark his involvement in community activities. In addition to the Festival, Richard was President of the Hoddesdon Music Club, Vice President of East Herts Operatic Society, Chairman of the Hoddesdon Society and chair of the Broxbourne Trustees for Open Spaces.

Richard played cricket for Hoddesdon and was a committee member at Hoddesdon Town Football Club from 1965 - 1982, including writing the programme notes for Hoddesdon's successful appearance at Wembley in the FA Vase in 1975.

On retiring from a career in the Civil Service, Richard was a Justice of the Peace and also a founder member of the Lea Valley University of the Third Age.
