John RichardSEABORNEA true gentleman departs. It is with sadness that we announce the death of John Seaborne who passed away peacefully in the RD&E Hospital aged 80. John was a long term resident of Dawlish and is survived by Christine, his wife of 55 years, daughter Anne and son Richard and three grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Kay and her family who are also Dawlish residents. John had a long career in Civil Engineering from 1962- 2002 at Exeter City Council, Thamesdown Borough Council (Swindon) and, latterly, Torbay Borough Council. During his career, John was involved in a number of high profile projects including the construction of Exe Bridges (and the moving of the Tudor 'house that moved') in Exeter, the design of the famous 'Magic Roundabout' in Swindon and transforming Fleet Street and Harbour Walk in Torquay into a popular pedestrian area with pavement cafes. In addition to their professional careers, John and Christine were keen market gardeners during the 1980s delivering soft fruit and vegetables to local shops in Dawlish and Torquay. John was an enthusiastic member of several local community organisations. He was instrumental in relocating the scout hut in Dawlish and recently assisted with the modernisation of the hut for a new generation of cubs and scouts to enjoy. He has also been a member of Dawlish Water Rotary for 30 years and served as President twice, raising money for local, national and international causes. John was passionate about most sports, particularly motorsport and Formula 1, until recently he enjoyed driving a Morgan and was a keen member of the local Crash Box Club. The Cremation Service will be for the immediate family. There will be a Memorial Event, celebrating John's life at The Strand Community Centre, Dawlish EX7 9PT on Friday 17th September 2021 between 3pm-6pm. Friends and acquaintances who have been double vaccinated are welcome to drop in. COVID precautions will be encouraged please. Donations to support the work that the Strand Centre provides to the Community would be appreciated (Charity number 1137694)
