CarlTIGHECarl Tighe passed away on 8 May 2020, aged 70 years. He will be remembered with 'bucketloads' of love by his wife Madeleine, his stepson Luke, his four brothers and two sisters. He was a true Renaissance man, artistic, knowledgeable, wise, athletic, social and caring. He will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on in the influence he made upon the world as a writer, a teacher, a mentor, a brother and friend.

By one of those weird serendipitous things I suddenly thought of Carl today (after reading a review of a new book about Poland). I was so sad then to google him and hear of his death. We were PhD students together in Manchester back in the 1990s (I was studying the Catholic Church and the Labour Party) and I have fond memories of those days in our offices in the attic space in Dover Street. As my eldest is now doing a PhD I find I think of those times more often. I remember we all thought of Carl as the grown up in the building (I see I was born 13 years after him) and were slightly in awe of him. I am so pleased to read that he went on to live such a full life, while obviously upset that it was cut short. My thoughts are with those close to him.

Remembering our wedding anniversary today.
‘Love is when your roots grow towards each other underground and when all the pretty blossom has fallen from the branches there is one tree and not two.’
‘Now we feel no rain, for each of us will be shelter to the other. Now we feel no cold, for each of us will be warmth to the other. Now there is no loneliness, for each of us will be companion to the other.’
Carl - “I will always feel your love and support even as I miss you. Thank you for the many years of happiness together”.
