JohnALDERMAN ROBERTSJohn Roberts, born in Gilfach, Bargoed, Wales in 1940 passed away on 1st June 2024. John moved to Essex working as a Biochemist lecturing at the University of East London. Before the Student Loans Company existed, he solely founded a charity raising funds to give grants to young people with a focus on those requiring an undergraduate university placement year particularly in Hospitals which could otherwise not afford to pay them. The Charity Commission shows he raised over a million pounds a year yet gave away 96% a year and the charity ran until 2006. Over 3,000 students received aid giving them a good start in life as adults. From 1997 to 2013 he was elected as a county councillor serving the people of Hutton, Brentwood at Essex County Council. On 10th May 2022 the Chairman of Essex County Council approved the title of Alderman be awarded to John Roberts which achieved a two-thirds majority vote at full council. John leaves behind two sons and three daughters as well as a wife married 48 years. John was much liked in the community and was often seen with his wife & son delivering council leaflets, attending parish council meetings, talking with local shop owners or walking in Thorndon Park. Many have lost a good friend.
