Thomas JamesARMSTRONGThomas James Armstrong, of Haslingden Hall, Lancaster Avenue, Helmshore passed away at home on June 21, aged 87 years. Whilst travelling from Manchester via motorbike with his brother-in-law, to show him his evacuated war residence, Tommy fell in love with the valley. From a stable boy, mechanical fitter, polyurethane injector, finally after many varied careers eventually retiring from Keighley and Taylors. Tommy was hands on with everything he touched, motorbikes, cars and boats. Also going on to build two boats, a 28ft canal boat and a 18ft fishing boat all refurbished from the shell of Hassy Sea Cadets Boat Park Avenue. Thomas was a lifelong member of Bury Boat Club, building both sailing steam, wind and also electric powered boats, always willing and able to lend a hand. Tommy was married to Mary for 36 years, who sadly passed away in 2013, leaving Carol, Paula, Michael and Sandra (Thomas’ step children). Also many loving friends, relations and grandchildren. Thomas is survived by his former wife Patricia leaving Julie, David, Deborah and Stephen. A service will be held on Friday, July 5 at Fred Hamer, James Street, Rawtenstall at 12.15pm on to Burnley Crematorium. Donations to Dementia UK.
