Stephen Birch,
Was one of my teachers at Grimsby Nautical College for my 2nd Mates, Mates and Masters Board of Trade, Merchant Navy Certificates of Competence.
Stephen was not only a dedicated teacher but his friendly and supportive manner made it a great pleasure to attend the college.
Subsequently we would meet and have a friendly, salty conversation following Services that I would attend with my late Mother, Mollie Lawrence, at what I knew at St James Parish Church, whenever I was in Grimsby.
I will always be very grateful for Stephen's help in getting me to the position where I was able to accept the position of Master on their ice-strengthened Royal Research Ship Bransfield with the British Antarctic Survey with whom I served for 33 years of my 43 year career in the Merchant Navy.
