John AnthonyHILLMANThe Hillman family of Conwy are sad to announce the death of John Anthony Hillman, father to Simon, Barbara, Pauline and Vanessa and grandfather to 13 grandchildren, also husband to Patricia Hillman, mother of his four children and of Frances Hillman, both deceased. Born in Liverpool and educated at Durham University, John was a curate in Llangollen, before becoming a vicar, where he served in South Africa for Cape Town diocese, and where he took a stand against apartheid for which he was forced to leave the country with his family in 1986. Back in the UK he was a vicar in Porthill, Staffordshire, and East Goscote, Leicestershire before retiring to Penrhyn Bay. As a child he spent considerable time in North Wales as a war evacuee, so it was something of a homecoming. During retirement, John worked on the narrow gauge railways and kept an extensive model railway layout in the loft at his house in Penrhyn Bay. He was also a fan of chamber music and of Bach in particular, as well as mountain walking, the latter he continued until 2018. John continued to serve on occasion for the local diocese, before dementia took hold. He was cared for by his son and, in the past 15 months by the kind staff of the EMI care home, The Gables. John was a man of great conviction and will be greatly missed, not least for his satirical humour and meaningful conversation on matters from theology to politics, comedy, travel and trains. The funeral will take place at St David’s Church, Penrhyn Bay where he married his second wife, Frances Hillman and where the funerals of both Pat and Frances took place. Due to current restrictions, the family regret to say that attendance is by invitation only. A webcast of the committal service at Colwyn Bay Crematorium on Tuesday 6th April 2021, will be available to watch from 12.25pm via www.obitus.com, Username - sagu3670, Password – 807639. Phyl and Alan. St Paul's Craig y Don. Always enjoyed John's company with frequent Sunday lunches out and stay in our Wallasey home. Our visit to Liverpool haunts and Wallasey home of his Aunt where he spent his youthful Summers. Great memories of debate and fun. Now at peace with his God.
