JoanHORNSBYWith respect, pride and sadness, we announce that Mrs. Joan Hornsby died peacefully at 6am on Monday 21st October 2024 in the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Notably a Freeman of the City herself - amongst the first women to be honoured with such a title - Joan was a passionate, quick witted Geordie through and through. A lifelong fan of Shirley Bassey, bingo, people watching and the Manly ferry, she was a larger than life character with loyal fans of all generations spanning Saint-Léon d'Issigeac in the south of France, all the way to the staff at the Sydney Opera House.

She is survived by her equally stubborn son Alan Hill, even more stubborn grandchildren Alister Hill and Jodie Hill, and her great granddaughter Frances Penkethman-Hill who is fairly evenly tempered for a 17-month old.

We hope she is finally reunited with her husband and the love of her life, Bob Hornsby.

If you wish to pay your respects to Joan alongside Alan and Jodie, we will be celebrating her life on Wednesday 30th October 2024 at The Cosy Dove, Hunter's Road, Spital Tongues at 3pm.

With all our love,

Alan, Alister, Jodie

Shocked of the news. Joan was a dear friend for many years. We met in 1970 in Callela, Spain. We rang each other every Sunday. She will be sadly missed. Deepest sympathy to Alan & family. Leaving my mobile number if Alan wants to ring. Love Derek Britten, Norrhampton
