RowlandJACKMAN (Dick)Dick Rowland Jackman, known as Dick Jackman, died peacefully on 9th May at Kahala Court where he had enjoyed the last of the 101 years of his interesting life. He will be sorely missed by his children, Bunty, Colin, Richard, Jane and Mark and his 12 grandchildren and 9 great grand-children who loved him greatly. He enlisted in the Royal Navy before WW2, assisting evacuees from Barcelona in the Spanish civil war onto the Hood, became a submariner and served as a liaison officer with the Dutch and then the Greek Navy. He worked in communications in Libya and Malta post war before settling near Winchester to work with GCHQ. He retired to Salcombe with his beloved wife Joan, who predeceased him, to enjoy his passions of sailing, fishing and carpentry and providing holidays for his family. He was a very practical, determined and self-sufficient man who enjoyed sitting down to a meal where everything had been either caught, grown or made by the people present. He had a fund of stories, a good sense of humour and a slightly belligerent attitude to authority. He requested no service, having no truck with organised religion either.

Pa was an important part of our lives for many years. I have many happy memories of him and Abbie especially when Mark and I visited Salcombe in the summer holidays. They made us so welcome. My favourite of all was fishing for mackerel off Lippizaner . He taught me how to catch them and at the end of the day cooked them for us on the boat. So delicious... with tomatoes and onions... It was a wonderful day.

Dick was a beautiful soul.
Fortunately my wife and I saw him in his home about five years ago.
And he still had loads of fascinating stories to tell.
We will miss him,
Dave and Kathy.

Uncle Dick was a great character with a wealth of stories of his exploits both during and after the war. He will be sadly missed by all.
