I still cannot wrap my head around the fact that I will have no more adventures with Ali. There is so much I want to say to convey how much she has meant to me these last 20 years, but I find I have no words to convey what I feel.
I met Ali on an HF walk on Mallorca in 2001, three weeks after the 9/11 attacks leveled the skyscrapers less than five minutes walk from my workplace. Emotionally battered as I was, I was unable to resist such an enthusiastic, vivacious Yorkshire lass, always with a smile on her face, a laugh to go with it and a smart, empathetic mind to match. I doubt anyone could.
Over the many years since then, we've swapped digs and met in New York and London whenever we were in the same city at the same time or her beloved Meston. I have always been in her thrall - her joie de vivre, her bubbly enthusiasm and her talent for always doing and saying the right thing were infectious. Ali packed more into a day than I packed into a week and when we were together, I always felt my years melt away. Every day I was with her was a marvel and adventure - something new and wonderful, orchestrated by my friend with boundless energy and zest for living.
Her reality these last few years remains incomprehensibly cruel and the very opposite of the Ali I know and love. But even in extremis, her last correspondences to me - really only a few words on WhatsApp - showed the same desire to embrace the world as she always had.
How I will miss my dear friend, who always made me laugh, who always carried me beyond myself, who grabbed every minute of every day with joy, gusto and a passion for life no one I know can come close to matching.

I first met Alison on the beach in East Hampton, NY in May of 2017. At once I was attracted to her smile and friendly greeting. We walked for an hour down the beach talking as if we were friends for years. We went out to dinner that night and when she told me she was on her way back to NYC, where I lived, we arranged to go to a museum together. That. began a friendship that covered several visits to NYC and one to San Francisco where we would do museums, plays, walking in the park, and of course, eating all the time as we know she enjoyed her food! The topper was my visit to London in the fall of 2019. She was my tour guide and dear friend that showed me your beautiful city and why it is famous the world over. She loved to make fun of us "Americans" and our antics and being impulsive. However, we agreed on so many levels of conversation from politics to the psychology of being human to our favorite music (John Grant) and her love of Iceland. In fact, she gave me a piece of her beautiful art (a harbor in Reykjavik) which is hanging right in front of me. It is with deep sadness that I mourn the loss of a dear, loving, kind human that was always thinking of the world and especially her mum, brothers, and her friends from school. I am so thankful that I have wonderful memories and pictures that will hold her close to my heart. Rest in peace my dearest friend!
