Iris Nutting. What a remarkable woman.
Iris came to stay with our family in Scotland in the 1970s. She was studying for her social work degree and had a work placement with a project my Dad was leading – establishing The Samaritans in gritty Glasgow.
She immediately made a lasting impression, becoming a much loved, and to us kids, quite an exotic part of our family.
I vividly remember our first family visits to London as excited young teens, staying at Sutton Road, and being intoduced to the wonders of the city by one of London’s most connected, informed and greatest insiders.
Iris visited us twice in New Zealand, and is remembered with huge affection by my extended Kiwi family and everyone who was fortunate to have met her.
Over the years Iris became a touchstone for me personally. Whenever I saw her, travelling home every few years after I moved to New Zealand, I cherished our time together - her takes on politics, on the books and films we both enjoyed, and especially on life.
She had the most perceptive, interesting and original opinions of anyone I’ve known.
I will miss Iris so much, but am so grateful she has been such an important part of my life.
