Marcus was a remarkable man - a kind, sympathetic friend, a great listener, always supportive of other people's dreams and plans. He was a fine writer, and one of his greatest strengths (as a writer, and a person) was that he was always interested in other people. He wasn't remotely materialistic, he wasn't interested in money or status or possessions, and he was never envious of people who had more of these things than he did. I knew him first as a colleague, at the Mail on Sunday, and later as a friend, when we were both trying to write books instead of journalism. Marcus wrote his book - a masterpiece, The Last Wrestlers, which will certainly outlive him. He will be missed by countless people across the world whose lives he touched, whom he encouraged and inspired.
