During our family visits to Wales when we were children, I was so excited to see Arthur -- always warm and kind, funny, quick with Diane to treat us to marshmallow fluff and a laugh. Visits to their home were the highlights of the trip. Only years later, when lucky enough to see he and Diane on a trip to Cardiff, did I know him more fully as a man whose personal strength and brightness had let him live so fully, and with so much giving and care (through the Red Cross, to his family, to the uni and to his later education...).

With the wish I could have seen him more, as his friend and not just his nephew, and with all my love to Diane, my mother Elaine and the entire family,

And in fondest remembrance,
His nephew, Matthew

Cousin Arthur, certainly one of the brains of the family
I remember going to Canada with him in early 1970's.
Photo shows Him, Sheryl and Cathy at Niagara Falls at that time.
Rest in peace with the Lord

I was born in Cardiff in 1940 into a mining family. We were related to Arthur Cannard through our common ancestors, Charles Crockett and his wife Rachel Thomas. Sadly, I never got to meet Arthur because my family emigrated to Canada in 1948, when I was not quite 8 years old. My father, William Watkins, always said that the Crocketts were the "toffs" in the family. I wish I could have known Arthur, but I did meet the son of Charles and Rachel in 1`969, when I returned to Wales for the first time. This Uncle Arthur was in his 90s and was still singing and playing the piano. He lived in Pontypridd (Hopkinstown) with his daughter, and other members of the family. It was a delight meeting him, and now when I think of my Uncle Arthur I shall also fondly remember his namesake, cousin Arthur Cannard who lived in Cardiff. His Canadian cousins send our condolences to his family during this very sorrowful time.
