WernerKNAPPE(Higher Blackley) Aged 91, died peacefully on Saturday 15th January 2011 in Hospital following a long period of illness. Husband to the deceased Frieda Knappe, he leaves his Step Daughter Karin and Grandchildren Matt and Adam, Relatives in Germany and many close Friends. Born and raised in Hamburg Germany, In his early years, Werner was a semi-professional football referee and Dock Foreman in Hamburg until retirement. A widower, he remarried came to live in England in his retirement and lived in Blackley for over 25 years. In that time he took up a post as the local crossing patrol man and was known affectionately as the 'Lollipop man' on the corner of Rochdale Road and Victoria Avenue. He was much loved and popular and was asked to be the school Father Christmas for a number of years. Werner loved all people young and old and everybody who knew him liked him too, he always had a smile and was often seen walking his little dog Benny. A lifelong Football fan, Werner will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. A funeral service will be held at Blackley Crematorium on Thursday 27th January 2011.
