J Allan Patmore
Added by Maurice Graham
Allan was one of my closest friends when we were at Harrogate Grammar School together in the late 1940s. Intellectually superior to most of us in the Sixth Form, he was immensely good company and was admired by all his class mates, both male and female.
I wonder why it is that we remember our close friends by something trivial. In Allan's case, when a group of his friends were discussing the result of a boxing match fought by Joe Backsie (can't vouch for the spelling) who knocked out his opponent early in the contest, Allan considered for a moment, then said "He put him on his Backsie". Great groans from his friends. You cannot get a worse pun than that.

So very sad to hear about Allan's passing. Professor Patmore was my teacher and mentor when I was an undergraduate at the University of Hull (1975-1978), and later a colleague and mentor when I joined the staff in the Department of Geography after completing my PhD in 1983. He was a pioneer in the research field of leisure and recreation (and a steam locomotive enthusiast!), and a great teacher. I remember with considerable gratitude an occasion when, as a junior and quite green lecturer, he steered an opportunity for me to read out a report on a student at a final exam board meeting, in front of the External Examiners, knowing that it would show me in a good light. I carried the ethos of humility and helping others throughout my 30-year teaching career, where I too ended up as a Professor. A great teacher and a wonderful man. I am so grateful for my professional association with Allan Patmore and, whilst sad to read of his passing, am happy to reflect on all the positive things he contributed through his academic life.
