Raymond Banning taught me
how to play piano, he taught me about quality and tone and he taught me how to
teach. He also taught me about giving people a chance and recognising
potential. Ray was my piano teacher for many years until his increasing
workload in London meant that our sessions in Broadstairs would have to stop.
After some time and after trying several other tutors, I decided that I would
go it alone but eventually I was hardly playing at all. My Mum bumped into Ray
by chance one day and when she told him how I was, he invited me back and
rekindled my interest in music.
Ray was a mentor to me and now inspires me to play and write even more as I
strive for the same tone and quality with which I was taught. David Pickup
tutored music at Christ Church University and when I played for him at our
first meeting, his opening remark was “Do you know Ray Banning?”
When I play piano, Ray is never far from my thoughts and I can sometimes hear
him in certain notes... if I’m very lucky.
Thank you Ray
