How can you sum up in a few words nearly 96 years of an eventful life.
Mam (never mum) was a proud Yorkshire woman who refused to accept Humberside.
She survived a blast during the war and went on to have 3 boys with Norman (Dad).
We used to talk about the fun and laughs she had at Hudsons bakery. The old films and actors she enjoyed watching. John Mills, Cary Grant and Robert Mitchum. And she loved her budgies. We laughed together, even though I was on the other side of the world. Conversation was always easy, not searching for something to say. We would put the world to rights, at least for an hour and a half or so.
Much of what she showed me when I was young I have carried with me into later life. How to peel, core and slice an apple for a pie has never left me. I can also make a mean chicken stew and dumplings all thanks to her.
I was proud to tell people about how she was still living in her own house in her 90's and still independent.
The last 18 months have been cruel to someone who was a force of nature.
She loved her family and extended family and was the last of her generation.
As her favourite singer Nat King Cole sang she was unforgettable.
Hopefully if there is an afterlife you'll be re-united with Dad now.
Bye for now Mam, will miss you.
Brian and Carol (daughter in law) xx

One last letter to you, my Groovy Gran,

You weren't just a grandmother to me, you were my very own little time capsule - a doorway back to a time when the world was simpler.

A time of baking, running to catch the bus, shopping...lots of shopping! Dancing to 1940's music, watching black-and-white films and laughing at Laurel and Hardy.

You gave me little glimpses into a world gone by, a world i could only otherwise imagine. And those memories are something i will carry with me forever. They are the most cherished possession you ever left me.

You were so much more than just my Groovy Gran. You were a piece of history, a piece of my childhood, and a very special and prominent piece of my life.

I will forever miss my little time capsule of life.

Until 'we meet again', Groovy Gran.
I love you. Stephie.

I felt your love to the very end with the tiniest squeeze of my hand.
You had an amazing life, lots of highs and sadly, some lows too, and I was just fortunate to be a part of it and listened with interest to the stories of past times. Thank you for making my life a good one and showing my children the same love and support you showed me. Sleep peacefully now mam reunited with dad. Love you and miss you always xx Martin
