CHARMIAN CAMPBELLwas a noted portrait artist and socialite.She was known for her drawings of children, including those of the King and Queen of Spain and of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, as well as film starNatalie Woodand her children.Nevertheles s she was known for her modesty and charged low fees, some sometimes waiving them entirely.Charmian Rachel Montagu Douglas Scott was born on 18 July, 1942, at Selkirk on the Scottish borders. Her mother was the renowned portrait painter Molly Bishop and her father Lord George Montagu Douglas Scott.She grew up in Wiltshire and studied art in Florence and at the Chelsea School of Art. Frustrated at the mundane nature of her work there, she turned to modelling for a time, being photographed by the likesLord Lichfieldand Cecil Beaton.However, after car crash left her with minor facial injuries she returned to her drawing. Throughout her career she was known for her traditionalist style in contrast to the trends of the era. This approach restricted her success within the artistic community but added to her appeal with private patrons.Her second husband was TV executive Colin Campbell and the pair were noted for the parties they threw at their home in Lansdowne Gardens. When they attended other people's parties, Charmian would give the hosts a drawing of their house, garden or pet as a gift.Charmian Campbell died on 5 April aged 66.
