JACK LORDHawaii Five-O star Jack Lord died on 21 January, 1998, aged 77.His role in the sun-drenched cop show was the best knownpart in a film and television career that got under way in the 1950s.He was also an actor on and off Broadway.He played Detective Steve McGarrett in Hawaii Five-O from 1968 until 1980,Born as John Joseph Patrick Ryan in New York on 30 December, 1920, Jack Lord studied acting alongside the likes of Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, and Marilyn Monroe, working as a part-time car salesman to pay for his tuition.He worked on the stage in his home city, including a run in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, before making a film debut in Project X (1949).Before landing the lead role in Hawaii Five-O, Mr Lord worked prolifically as a supporting artist during the 1950s and '60s, appearing in many Western shows, including Gunsmoke (1957), Bonanza (1960), Rawhide (1959, 1961) and The Virginian (1966), and cop shows like The Untouchables (1959) and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1967).In the early sixties he had the title role in the Western series Stoney Burke (1962-63).His films roles included being the first Felix Leiter opposite James Bond in Dr. No (1962). He played alongside Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958). Aside from acting Mr Lord was a painter and enjoyed poetry.He died at home from heart failure in Honolulu, Hawaii. He left his $400m fortune to his wife Marie and in turn it went to charity after she died in 2005.
