Brenda MargaretHOPWOODof Queen Elizabeth Crescent died on Saturday, April 1, aged 82 years. Brenda met Peter dancing at the Conservative Club and within weeks she was working Saturday at the family business J&N Hopwood’s Fancy and Leather Goods Shop in Warner Street and Church Street, Accrington. She worked full-time at Hopwood’s when Peter began his National Service based in Malaya. Brenda and Peter were married in 1960 and soon after daughters Helen and Claire arrived. Holidays were enjoyed at the caravan in Cockerham and meeting up with friends in Tenby. By 1970 Brenda and family moved to Hollins Lane and Brenda took over the running of the family business. In 1980 the fancy goods shop was moved to little Blackburn Road to join husband Peter who had Hopwood’s Electrical, where the couple were able to assist one another until retiring in 2000. It wasn’t an easy decision, as Hopwood’s has been in business in Accrington for over 50 years. Brenda loved travelling around Europe, Cockerham, touring around the coast where they would stay for weeks before returning home to be with grandchildren Bethany and Amy. Brenda supported husband Peter during his 30 years in the Accrington Lions, taking in toys at the shops ready for the Christmas Gift Appeal. Later in life she assisted Peter again to put on social evenings for the Arthritis Association at the Poplar Club, Wellington Street. Married to Peter for 63 years, they celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary which included a telegram from Queen Elizabeth II. Brenda leaves behind husband Peter, daughters Helen and Claire and grandchildren Bethany and Amy. The funeral will take place on Monday, April 24 at 1pm at Accrington Crematorium. Family flowers only. Donations in her memory would be appreciated to the British Heart Foundation. Funeral director: Hyndburn Funeral Services, Accrington.
