George was my music teacher at Marr from 1973 to 1978. He encouraged me and all his students to take music seriously and persuaded me that you could make it your career. He had an acerbic wit which did much to offset his legendary temper. Often after a class with a few minutes to spare he would sit and improvise at the piano while chatting to the class often throwing in great one-liners. One of my favourites “All the great composers are dead and I’m not feeling too good myself today…”.
He was a legend. RIP

Before he went to Marr College, George was the Senior Music Teacher at Dalry High School where he mounted several excellent G&S productions.
He was an excellent teacher who demanded (and always got) the best out of all the scholars fortunate to come under his tutelage.
His fiery temper was due to a gene (as well as his red hair) from his Brennan ancestry: many of his wide-spread cousins share this trait.
I was privileged to have been taught by him until O-level grade in 1965, my only regret being he left to go to Marr that year in the autumn.
