It is with sadness that I learned today that my Uncle Dennis Mulberry had passed.
Dennis was the younger brother of my father, Stanley Mulberry, his only sibling. He and my Aunty Jeanne, his wife, never had children. As a young child, I used to often meet them at my grandparents’ house in Northville, Bristol. I recall happy times at Christmas, in the 1960s, when we would all get together before I moved with my parents to Kent.
Dennis was an intellectual liberal man. He was well read and loved music. After service in the RAF during the Second World war, he returned home, trained as a school teacher in Cheltenham and devoted the rest of his working years to teaching. He married my Aunty Jeanne and then for many decades at Elm Park in Filton. For many years he sang in church choirs and sometimes played the organ. At home, he was an avid pianist, and one of the few people I know who never had a television.
I feel rather ashamed that I did not know sooner. Uncle Dennis was a very private man who let it be known some fifteen years ago that he preferred not to receive visitors. Prior to that I would head to his house in Filton when visiting the area. He was very kind a few years after that when my marriage broke down and invited me to visit and talk it through.
