Uncle John was a very important part of my life growing up. Both John and Val always made me feel like a much-loved part of the family, and they gave me guidance, encouragement and support in so many ways. Their influence helped shape me as I grew up and, in many respects, helped form the moral compass that has stayed with me throughout my life.

As a child, I would eagerly await invitations to join the Bodenham clan for tea (Val’s chips were the best!) or to the Christmas Day parties, where Caroline and I would have such wonderful times together. Those are very precious memories of my childhood, of which John was an important part.

In more recent years, Graham and I enjoyed so many wonderful conversations with John. Whether debating the share price of companies we were working for, discussing current affairs or simply sharing thoughts on life, John loved nothing more than a good conversation. And, of course, there was always the perfect setting for it - a lovely dinner created by Caroline, a bottle of red wine, and then a medley of his and Val’s favourite music.

It was as I grew older that I have come to appreciate just how talented John was in so many different ways. He made my sister’s engagement ring and bracelet, creating something that was not only beautiful but incredibly personal. Those pieces will always be treasured, not simply because of what they are, but because they were made by John, a lasting reminder of his talent and the love he put into everything he created.

John leaves behind a beautiful legacy in the people he loved, the things he created and the memories he gave us. I can see so much of his creativity, character and spirit reflected in his family, and I know that his influence will continue to always live on through them.

I will always feel privileged to have been welcomed so warmly into the Bodenham family, and although he was never my uncle by blood, he will always be Uncle John to me.
