Although I can't be there in person to say goodbye, I wanted to put into words some of my memories of him and, most importantly, the special place he held in my life.
I remember Ron spending many hours in the garage playing darts with Brad, accompanied by beer, cigarettes and, I'm sure, plenty of conversation. Those 2 had a very special friendship. It even survived the 2 of them building part of the conservatory together!
But my memories of Ron go far beyond those everyday things. For many years, he was like a father to me, and he always treated me with love, kindness and patience. That is something I will always treasure.
Mum and Ron shared 30 years together (second time around). They travelled a lot, including visits to Australia to see Joanne and her family and me and mine, and enjoyed many cruises together. I was lucky enough to share some wonderful adventures with them, too.
One of my favourite memories is when Ron came to Australia to visit us. We travelled through New Zealand's South Island together. There were countless card games, a walk up Fox Glacier and games of Boule in Akaroa. These things remind me of the laughter, the time spent together and the happiness of sharing experiences with people you love.
Ron had a lovely way with his (step) granddaughter, Jess, too. She loved playing with his nose, and he would entertain her with his brilliant impersonation of the Laughing Policeman. I hope those memories always bring a smile to her face, because those little moments are precious.
Ron, thank you for being part of my life. Thank you for the laughter, the adventures and the kindness you showed me (and for always beating me at cribbage). I will always be grateful that our paths crossed and that you became such an important person to me.
I hope you are now at peace, free from the struggles of your final years.
You will always have a special place in my heart.
Rest peacefully, Ron.
