Iain was my oldest friend, we'd known each other since the 1950s when we were neighbours in Glasgow. As we grew up we became even closer, having similar interests in railways in our early teens, to politics in our late teens - that's when his political career really started. Iain had a great sense of humour and had a huge memory for silly jokes which we all laughed at and joined in the punchlines for years. We were at the same university, different courses, but our early careers took us away from Glasgow, but we always visited each other, in the early days of his stays in Colchester and Marlow. After his marriage to Dorothy, I used to visit him at his first family homes in Stevenage, then Knebworth, and remember when his daughter Alison came along. He then moved to East Ravendale, near Grimsby, where the huge lawn justified his purchase of a sit-on lawn mower. These were happy days for everyone. The icing on the cake for Sylvie & me was when Iain & Dorothy visited us at our home in Cyprus . It was a memorable week. I have lots of great memories of Iain, which are really far too many to list in detail, but suffice to say he will be greatly missed.
