CRAIG OWEN16-year-old Craig Owen, who died when a sand tunnel collapsed on him on 3 August, 2008, was described by his head teacher as a model pupil and outstanding young man.Rob Ratcliffe, head teacher at Bryn Alyn School in Wrexham, said Craig had been expecting top grades in his GCSEs and his death had stunned the school community.Mr Ratcliffe, whose own son had recently died, said: "Craig Owen was an outstanding young man. He was bright, funny, considerate and had a wide circle of friends."Losing a student is the worst thing that could happen to a school community. Craig was one of the very few students to be given an A grade for effort in every subject."He said Craig’s GCSE results had been due out on 21 August, 2008, and the school was expecting top grades in all subjects."It is a real tragedy and having recently lost a son of my own I feel so much for Craig's parents and his family," added Mr Ratcliffe.Craig, from Brymbo, Wrexham, had been building the sand tunnel with some friends when it collapsed around him.The tragedy happened on a Sunday evening at Cefn Sidan beach near Burry Port, westWales, where the teenager and his family reportedly went on holiday every year.He was trapped under 5ft of sand after he and his friends had dug two deep holes connected by a tunnel in the dunes.Floral tributes were left at the beach and its blue flag flew at half-mast.
