As the eldest nephew of ‘Auntie Hil’, I wanted to recount some of my fondest memories and stories of this wonderful lady. Over the years, I remember the many conversations I had with her both in person and by phone. These exchanges were always like a cross-examination with question after question from Auntie Hil, catching up with what I had been up to since she last saw me. I could barely answer her before the next question arrived – and this went on for 15 minutes or more.
Then there were the lunch invitations when we visited her in Nefyn. She told us that she had made a reservation at her favourite pub or restaurant, and that was that. Even if you weren’t hungry, there was no refusing Auntie Hil. But, I always enjoyed these lunches. She also often served us tea in her big house in Nefyn, preparing a wonderful spread for us. Then she would sit at the end of the table and watch us eat and, being humble, would not join us in case there was not enough for everyone.
I believe that she was teaching dance moves to her fellow residents at the care home, in her 100’s, when she could barely see! Being a dancer and dancing teacher all her life, she moved so gracefully, even in old age, and could not resist the need to teach others.
In Auntie Hil’s later years, she was lucky enough to have her wonderful niece, Prue, to visit her and keep her in touch with family news. Over many years, Prue has diligently visited and cared for Auntie Hil in Nefyn, on a regular basis and in all types of weather.
Finally, one of my lasting memories of Auntie Hil, is from Prue’s daughter’s (Kate’s) wedding when Hil was dressed in all her finery and looks wonderful in photos with Prue.
Thanks, Auntie Hil, for living to 105 and giving us so many memories of you to cherish.
