PeterLEWISPeter Lewis died on 25 January while sitting in his chair by his window at Whittington House Care Home. He was 11 days shy of his 95th birthday.
Peter was an art teacher, university lecturer, artist, furniture maker, photographer, sculptor, potter, musician, gardener and dedicated chapel member. He was married to Elizabeth, a social worker for adults with learning disabilities, and was widowed when Elizabeth died in November 2021.
Peter and Elizabeth moved to Gotherington from Taunton in 1968 when Peter became Head of Art at Cleeve School. He taught here until he took early retirement in 1984. He was a passionate advocate for comprehensive schooling and believed in equal educational opportunities for all. Peter also taught short courses on the history of art and architecture for Birmingham and Bristol Universities. He loved teaching all of his university students and most of his Cleeve School students.
Peter and Elizabeth are survived by their four children, who brought them joy and frustration in equal measure, and their nine grandchildren, who brought them only unbridled joy.
A service of Thanksgiving will be held on Friday 1 March at St Michael's and All Angels Church, Bishops Cleeve at 12.30pm. Please wear a bright colour or two.
Peter requested family flowers only. If you wish to make a donation, his charity of choice is Tear Fund - an international Christian charity that tackles poverty and provides disaster relief for disadvantaged communities.
The funeral director is Alexander Burn, Bishops Cleeve.
