Martin was my friend in South Wales. Many years ago we struck up a friendship through his Uncle David and Auntie Pat who I know in the suburbs of south west London.
We chatted and texted over the phone saying what was happening in each other's lives and exchanging advice.
We first met face-to-face in a snowy Bristol and I visited Martin a few times in Bridgend. He drove us to several coastal locations which was a treat for me.
The first occasion was dramatic - we were sitting on the clifftop and became concerned for a man in the sea far from the beach.
We called 999 for the coastguard but when we arrived at the beach the man strolled up the sand telling the coastguard he had not been in trouble and was perfectly fine. The coastguard assured us we had done the right thing in calling them.
I shall miss Martin who I could call on.
