The obituary notice of Lorna Stewart SMITH (née Borrowman)

Lorna was a stalwart of the Association for many years. She served on Council, both as an ordinary member and as the Secretary of the Association, and was a mainstay of our Education committee. She co-edited our series of Scotnotes study guides, drawing on her skills as a writer and her many years as a schoolteacher to ensure that the books were clear, helpful, and accessible. She also wrote an invaluable edition in the series on the poetry of Jackie Kay, which we were fortunate to be able to publish, and was finishing another volume for us on the poetry of Kathleen Jamie, which we will bring out in 2025. We were lucky to know her; we will all miss her calm good sense, her infectious enthusiasm, and her warm good humour.

We have very Happy Memories of Lorna in Tullibody, and her Burns expertise for one of the concerts at Wallace High School which Fraser was involved in.
I met her at Stirling Station, on her way to Edinburgh, carrying a musical instrument ,and had a quick word before my train for Aberdeen came in,and I had to leave her. We always exchanged Christmas cards, and she always wrote about what had been happening that year, and she was one person I had very much wanted to visit in her flat at Riverside, and sadly won't be able to do that now. As a family, we send our condolances to you Stewart and Mariam and to her sister Maureen and brother-in-law Leslie. Being the daughter of the manse, she also said her father had told her and Maureen not to discuss politics with any parishioners who might be speering by asking them as children, and I think she had a very gentle dignity and thoughtfulness about everything she said and did, which had been instilled in her by her parents. She gave us a lovely picture of the Wallace Monument when we were moving to live in Newport-on Tay, Fife.
