The obituary notice of Allan James (Jim) TUCKER

We were very sad to hear of Allan’s death. As Bill James he brought us a huge amount of pleasure over many years.

We’re both rapacious readers, with three or four books on the go at any time. Despite this, the arrival of a new Harpur & Iles novel always caused us - and a number of friends - to pause everything else so we could read that as soon as possible.

I think we can honestly say that no other series of books have made the impact those have had on us. Key characters, perfectly and economically defined over a series of stories, have stuck with us so clearly. ACC Iles is certainly one of the few genuine originals in literature - a magnificent and terrifying creation.

We’ve also loved how such amazingly funny stories have been crafted from a number of isolated incidents in such a compressed timeline.

The quality of dialogue - the nature of conversations between Harpur, Iles, Hazel, Lamb etc. - is incredible and like nothing else.

We hope that, over time, more people come to appreciate the amazing work that James produced. I hope that you’re all enormously proud at this difficult time.

Tŷ Hafan is a wonderful place full of love, laughter and cherished memories, ensuring a short life is a full life. These memories are something our families will treasure forever, just as you will treasure your memories of Jim. I really hope that can give you some solace during this incredibly sad time.
