In Memory of a True Gentleman
We say goodbye to a truly remarkable man — a great friend, a gentleman in every sense of the word, and someone who touched the lives of so many.
Goolam was blessed with exceptional talent on both the rugby and cricket fields. Sadly, he never received the opportunities his ability deserved in South African sport. Yet what set him apart was that he never carried bitterness or resentment. Instead, he moved overseas, displaying his talents for Bradford Northern Rugby Club, Castleton Moor CC and Rochdale CC. He accepted those injustices with dignity and humility, choosing to enjoy the game simply for the love of it.
I had the privilege of knowing him particularly well during our time at Rochdale CC in the early 1990s, when he managed the side while I captained it. His wisdom, calm presence, and unwavering support were invaluable. He was far more than a manager; he was a mentor, a confidant, and a sincere friend.
Away from sport, he cared deeply for my family — Sharon, Leigh, and Sean. While I was applying my trade on the sporting fields of the UK, he always made sure they were looked after. To them, and to so many others, he was much more than a friend. He was always there with a kind word, a warm smile, and genuine care.
He will not only be remembered for his sporting achievements, the trophies won, or the records achieved, but for the lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, and friendship.
We will miss his humour, his gentle nature, and his unwavering loyalty. We will treasure the memories, the stories, and the privilege of having shared part of life’s journey with him. And we will always remember his favourite saying, “Amigos para siempre” — friends forever. How fitting those words are today, because that is exactly how we will remember him.
Rest peacefully, my friend, and say “Hi” to Jean ❤️.
Your innings was one of character, grace, and love, and you will never be forgotten.
Dave, Sharon, Leigh & Sean Callaghan.
