AL ALBERTSAl Alberts, an American singer, died at the age of 87 on November 27, 2009.Mr Alberts was founder member and lead singer of the 1950s pop group The Four Aces who had number one singles Three Coins in the Fountain and Love is a Many Splendoured Thing.Both songs were written for Hollywood movies and won Oscars for best song in 1955 and 1956.He was also the host of a long-running American TV talent show which helped launch the careers of performers such as Sister Sledge and Teddy Pendergrass.Born Al Albertini in Pennsylvania, he went to South Philadelphia High School which produced an impressive number of show business stars including Joey Bishop, Al Martino, Mario Lanza, Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, and Fabian.After high school, Mr Alberts attended Temple University and then enlisted in the Navy, where he met Dave Mahoney.The pair formed The Four Aces in 1949 and recruited Lou Silvestri and Sol Vaccaro to complete the line-up.In Philadelphia he hosted a one-hour Saturday afternoon talent show, called Al Alberts Showcase which ran for more than 30 years.He retired to Florida with his wife Stella in 2001.The couple had two sons, Al and Chris.Chris Alberts told the Associated Press news agency his father died at his home in Arcadia, Florida, from complications from kidney failure.
