As Les has said Doug and I did do a lot of caddie golf and wagged it from school in the week to go to Midland golf clubs. Dougs mum wrote my wag notes for the school. Doug played a good game of rugby at school. After school I didn't Doug for years but when I came back to Cov we met up.So sad that Doug has left. I am sorry to say I am unable to be at Doug s final parting on the 20Sept. May you RIP. Pete Silvester.

For Doug - our pal.
1957 and Doug joined us at Whitmore Park Junior School - fitting in with the rest of the lads - becoming our mate. Then we - well most of us - graduated to Copthorne Secondary Modern School -but Modern it wasn't! Things soon changed when Colin Fairbrother was recruited as our sports master. Mr Fairbrother soon selected a spirited team of 'Under 13' lads - including Doug to compete in the City's Malcolm Cup Rugby Tournament...And compete they did - winning the Tournament, played at the city's Rugby Football Club's stadium. It would be fare to say that Doug was an important player in that squad - which was the biggest honour the school held in it's history. In later years it wasn't unknown for Doug and Pete to unselfishly forfeit a day's education to become Caddies - hauling bags of golf clubs around the city's Golf Club....Now how unselfish was that???
During his final year at Copthorne Doug blossomed into a tall, handsome and rather debonair chap - but still rather shy where girls were concerned. So, in order to coax him 'out of his shell' he accompanied Pete and myself to Butlin's Holiday Camp, Skegness. It would be fair comment to say that the week's holiday was a complete success. So successful in fact that together with JT and Jimmy we decided to return the following year!...Yes - Doug had conquered his shyness at last.
Like most school friends our gang seemed to take different routes in life - but whenever we did meet up it was the instant friendship that we all treasured...And now Doug has left us. To say Doug will be missed is a complete understatement - and in fact most of us think it's just a bad dream. But Doug has left us and we have to accept there is a huge void in our gang that's impossible to fill....Doug, us chaps loved you and miss you! - RIP till we meet again...from Pete, JT, Jimmy and me -Les x

Uncle Doug, you taught me how to shake hands like a man, you gave me my first ever red card on the football pitch (deffo didn’t warrant a red). More recently you’ve taught me not to speak to you when there’s sport on the TV.
Sleep tight mate x x x

A much loved uncle and godfather. You've left a hole that is impossible to fill, the only solace is the thought of you reuniting with nan and your sisters 🥺
Love you always!
