MichaelASHBURNER(Professor) of Swaffham Bulbeck and Cambridge University passed peacefully at home on Friday 7th July, aged 81. He was in the presence of his wife Francesca, with whom he had recently celebrated 60 years of marriage. Loved by his children, Rebecca, Geoff and Isabel, and his many friends around the world. The funeral will be held at Cambridge City Crematorium on Thursday, 20th July at 11am. There will also be a memorial event in the autumn at Churchill College for those who wish to celebrate his life but are unable to come now. Details will be available nearer the time. Donations to Caring Together who provided care and support to Michael and Francesca for many years.

Michael was a such a generous and warm-hearted person. I was extremely lucky to be one of his postdocs doing the cosmid clone mapping on the polytene chromosomes supported by the European Drosophila genome project in the nineties of the last centry. My career would get nowhere without his training and mentorship. He and Francesca visited me twice after I took an independent position in the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, one on a meeting on disease models, another on the CSHL course on fly genetics and genomics. I am sorry I could attend the funeral. But I am here to express my deep respect and gratitude to Michael.
